The Team

Montana State Women’s Hockey started in the summer of 2022. That first year the players ran everything themselves — they put together a full schedule and got the team into new uniforms on their own. In the summer of 2023, Sam Coulter, the Youth Hockey Director at the Bozeman Amateur Hockey Association (BAHA), came on as GM and Head Coach with a clear aim: build a program that lasts and can compete with anyone in the country.

We play in the WWCHL, part of the ACHA Women’s Division 1, with a full slate of 18 to 24 games from September through March. Home games are at the Haynes Pavilion. We’re always looking for players who want in on a young program that’s still being built — if that sounds like you, send us a message and someone from the club will get back to you.

Where do the Bobcats play home games and practices?
Home games are played at the Haynes Pavilion.
When are tryouts?
Tryouts are normally three ice sessions in late August or early September.
How do I sign up for tryouts?
You can sign up for tryouts at Catapalooza before school starts, or online here. Registration usually opens early August.
Will I be able to get ice time before tryouts?
Yes — there is normally at least one captains skate before tryouts begin, and anyone registered to try out is encouraged to attend.
Do I need a car?
No. Carpooling is the most common form of transportation to practices and games. Veterans with cars are encouraged and expected to give rides to players living on campus. We take a bus to away games.
Where do I keep my gear?
Veterans will store your gear in their garages off campus and bring it to games and practices.
How long is the season?
The season begins in September and runs until February or March, depending on whether the team qualifies for Nationals. There is a week-long break for Thanksgiving and a few weeks off for Christmas.
Will I have enough time for school and hockey?
School comes first — all players must maintain above a 2.0 GPA to play. College is tough, and if you need to miss a game or practice to study or finish homework, we completely understand.
What kind of time commitment can I expect?
Three 1.25-hour practices per week, plus home or away games on most weekends.
What is the best part of playing?
Stepping onto the ice in front of hundreds of screaming fans. Even better — winning at home, or silencing a rowdy crowd on the road.
